A tiny school on Alewa heights is doing it's part to keep Hawaii green.
The project involves one of nature's lowliest and hardest working creatures.

Consider the worm one of these little bins of worm can get rid of four pounds of garbage a day.
"You can take any of your garden scraps, your leftovers of food, junk mail - put it in there, have them digest it and they'll make this little liquid called worm tea which is a good fertilizer for your plants," said 6th grader, Brandon Wood.

Academy of the Pacific started out with one little flower pot of worms. The school now has more than 15 bins spread all over the campus. This Saturday at their country fair, students will be selling these worm bins complete with worms as a fundraiser. Environmental sciences teacher Jody Hisaka started the project to increase environmental awareness among the students.

"We put less in the landfill, we put fertilizer on our plants, we make use of everything. The more we can keep out of our landfills, the better off Hawaii is. We need to be self-sustaining," she said.

"Less food in the landfill, puts all the leftovers that your dogs or cat can't or won't eat. You can give it to them, they'll pretty much eat everything oh, but don't citrus fruits...that'll kill 'em," said Wood.

As Brandon and his friend Sam Mahoney continue to set up the worm bins for sale, we learn more about the country fair at the academy this Saturday from noon to four at the Academy of the Pacific.
