Welcome To The Academy of The Pacific!

A Unique Learning Proposition

Step onto our lush four-acre hillside estate in Honolulu, and we will dramatically change how you think about education. We like to call our campus a "Village for Learning," where bright cottage classrooms, sprawling open spaces and breathtaking views provide the backdrop for project-based lessons that promote individualized skill development.

This revolutionary approach to teaching was recognized in August 2009 by the Hawai'i Community Foundation, which named us a "School of the Future," one of a select group of Hawai'i private schools to embrace a progressive, hands-on curriculum. We are proud of this method, which we have used and expanded upon with great success since the school's founding nearly 50 years ago.

A curriculum in motion

Here, learning a lesson often means living it, so our students are encouraged to get their hands dirty. Students see complex life science and biology concepts unfold as we expand our plant and tree garden. They explore and track root systems, native plant species and wildlife, and eventually learn sustainable business practices when they harvest what they grow to sell at farmers' markets.

Artwork that displays the dynamic creative talents of our students is showcased throughout Honolulu in high-profile projects, while our art wall is an ever-changing window into a rich campus life.

Student research and projects are continually put into action. Classes monitor bins around campus where worms chew through pounds of food and paper scraps every day. With a strong spirit of community service, students then share their environmental knowledge at local events, showing how worm bins can be used at home to reduce landfill waste.

Challenging lessons are taught through practical application. Using mathematics and physics concepts, our high-school science classes are designing a life-size sailboat and plan to set sail within the next year. Other students work with NASA scientists to complete in-depth studies about the planet Mars, while data collected in science classes will help determine the positioning and feasibility of a planned wind turbine on campus.

We value hands-on learning that provides meaningful results, whether it is through state-of-the-art technologies or by simply helping a garden grow. Our teaching is so innovative because we recognize a depth of individual learning needs, which allows students to work at their own pace, while also fostering valuable teamwork and communication skills among our small group of students.

A Village for Learning

With a total enrollment of approximately 90 young men and women in grades 6 through 12, and an average class size of 8, one-third of many other public and private schools, Academy of the Pacific students, faculty and parents become a tight-knit 'ohana where no one slips through the cracks.
